The Village of Mijas (Mijas Pueblo in Spanish) is also known as the “White Village”. This happens to be among the most recognisable of all towns and villages in southern Spain. Like all tourist locations on the Costa del Sol, Mijas is part of the province of Malaga.

Several municipalities form the town of Mijas. Below we provide a little information about the best known areas.

Mijas Pueblo

The picturesque Village of Mijas is set high up on the mountainside, some 430 metres above sea level. The village is particularly striking due to it’s whitewashed walls and houses. These stand out against the surrounding mountains.

Mijas Pueblo lies to the north of Fuengirola. The towns of Benalmadena and Torremolinos are to the east

This small village has a population of around 7,500 permanent inhabitants all year round. These numbers swell during the summer with tourism. The beautiful cobbled streets and mountains speak volumes of the traditional Andalucian culture.

The climate here is mild during winter and hot in the summer. This idyllic location is well known for the stunning views of the mountains. You also have the Mediterranean coastline and surrounding tourist towns.

La Cala de Mijas

La Cala lies on the coastal area of the municipality. West of Fuengirola and to the east of the City of Marbella. La Cala was a small fishing village until the tourism boom in the 1960’s. This area now has a population of around 25,000 inhabitants.

La Cala was once named La Cala del Moral (Bay of Mulberries) due to the mulberry trees that grow in the area. The name of La Cala changed in the 1970’s to avoid confusion with La Cala del Moral. Another area with the same name which is lies outside Malaga.

Mijas Costa

This is the main commercial area of the town. This is the spot for most of the commercial centres and supermarkets. Other amenities include golf courses, bars and the restaurants. Covering an area of around 12 km’s, this is where you will find much of the residential housing. There are also many apartments, hotels and some super sandy beaches.

There are many fantastic beaches along the coastal areas of Mijas. Calahonda and Playa La Cala are the best known here. Calahonda lies to the west of the town. This popular beach has a length of 4500 metres and a width of 25 metres.

Playa La Cala is still quite a long beach with a length of around 2000 metres and width of 35 metres. Between Calahonda and La Cala is El Cabo Rocoso. This beach has a length of 1500 metres and width of 35 metres.

Some of the other beaches worth a mention include Playa del Chaparral, El Faro and El Charcon. All beaches found in this beautiful location are lovely and clean. Most have plenty of the services one would expect.
